Dear legend,

The Day of the Dead is a living tradition that relies on many local artisans for its unique decor. Weeks before the celebration, markets all across Mexico are brimming with Day of the Dead items.

San Miguel de Allende is not the exception. We visited a Day of the Dead market that sets up every year for about a month before the Day of the Dead in la Plaza de la Soledad.

Even if you do not celebrate the Day of the Dead, it is a good oportunity to see the vast array of unique figurines.

And if you can't visit, don't worry, we have photos.

DAY OF THE DEAD SUGAR ART | If you didn't know about the Day of the Dead or the popularity of sugar paste figurines, you could easily walk into a Day of the Dead market and think they were selling figurines just for decor.
The idea of most of it being edible may not even cross your mind.

MINIATURES

In a Day of the Dead market, chances are you will find something that will call out to you.

We loved the miniatures, like these cute tiny pigs.

TRADITIONAL MEXICAN CANDY | There are so many types of traditional Mexican candy that we could easily fill this entire page. But if you have never tried any of them before, we recommend the Dulce de leche and Cajeta. | D Best of San Miguel de Allende | Photographs and article by Onyx and Alexa

TRADITIONAL CANDY

Aside from the cute figurines, you should try some of the other traditional Mexican candies, which are well known for their taste.

We could easily fill this entire page with the many types of traditional Mexican Candy.

But if you have never tried any of them before, we recommend the Dulce de leche and the Cajeta.

DULCE DE LECHE
/DOOL-seh deh LEH-cheh/

The dulce de leche candies are somewhat like fudge. The most popular version is round with a pecan on the top in a soft brown hue, like in the photo above.

They may be a bit harder than your average fudge, and that is perfectly normal. San Miguel de Allende makes a lot of the candy locally, so it is possible that if you get candy here, it will be softer, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

CAJETA
/cah-HEH-tah/

Another popular favorite is the Cajeta, which is similar to caramel but with a thicker consistency.

The local Cajeta is usually packaged in glass jars, like the ones in the photo, though you can also find it in plastic bottles at the supermarket.

Try it as a spread on your toast in the morning.
