PRESERVING MEXICAN HERITAGE THROUGH OIL PAINTINGS

What is the Day of the Dead? Contrary to Halloween, The Day of the Dead is NOT a spooky celebration. It is a day of reverence and remembrance of the loved ones who have passed away. It is a celebration of the dead. | D Best of San Miguel de Allende | Photographs and article by Onyx and Alexa

Dear Legend,

Artists, like Horacio Rodríguez, may not realize their soul lives forever in their art, nor that their contribution in preserving or re-imagining the world is never forgotten once they reach someone who appreciates their work. Inspired by the charming historic elements of Mexican architecture, Mexican culture, and colorful elements of everyday life, Rodríguez creates beautiful oil paintings with great attention to detail that help preserve a part of Mexico's soul.

Rodríguez was born in Juchipila, Zacatecas, a picturesque town named after Xochipilli, the Aztec God of art, games, and flowers. It is in Juchipila that he first dreamt of becoming a painter, when he took fifth grade art class. His dream lay dormant for many years, while he took up a different profession as a means of livelihood.

Dreams, however, have a way of resurfacing. Sometimes all a person needs to start a dream is encouragement. Rodríguez' received support from his brother and thus began his journey to become a self-made painter. He bought oil painting supplies and painting magazines. He tried new techniques and learned most of what he knows through trial and error. His oil paintings are proof that even when life gets in the way, it is never too late to follow your dreams.

Artists get inspired by life and then they replenish the planet with inspiration of their own. After 22 years, you can see how experience and perseverance have led Rodríguez to capture the true spirit of a person or place. His love of painting is evident when you meet him. Rodríguez preserves Mexican heritage one brushstroke at a time.
