DAY OF THE DEAD OFFERINGS

On the Day of the Dead, all across Mexico, people set ofrendas (offerings) to remember those who have passed away. They are colorful displays with flowers, food, drink, sugar skulls, and photographs of loved ones.

Here's our visual recap of the Day of the Dead celebration in San Miguel de Allende 2017.

If you're thinking about visiting San Miguel de Allende for the yearly celebrations of the Day of the Dead, the best day to see the public displays is November 2nd.

WIND AND SHADOWS

Strands of tissue paper with intricate designs called papel picado are often used to decorate ofrendas. They wave in the wind and create unique shadows.

For the fourth year in a row, San Miguel de Allende created the Pyramid of the Dead, a structure over 26ft tall with individual ofrenda niches that become a larger than life work of art.

This pyramid is a community effort. It is a concept by renowed artist Tomas Burkey that is organized every year by La Calaca Festival. If you want to participate, La Calaca Festival has two donation levels, one to design your own niche, the other to have it created by the festival's artisans.

The setup of this large structure takes a couple of days. To see the finished pyramid stop by the inauguration ceremony, usually held on the evening of the 2nd of November.

A former textile factory, Fábrica La Aurora is now a haven for artists and collectors.

It is filled with many art galleries, interior design boutiques, shops, and workshops. You can also find places to eat and even a duck pond! Parking is not an issue.

Fábrica La Aurora held a special event the weekend prior to the Day of the Dead, and many of the shops displayed ofrendas.
