A POSTCARD FROM SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

Dear legend,

Hope you are having a great day!

The old San Miguel de Allende Railroad Depot, which saw its last passenger train in 1994 with destination Laredo, is experiencing a rebirth.

It has been elegantly restored, keeping the original doors and windows, and is now home to Plaza La Estación.

This chic store hosts an array of products made in the area.

Plaza La Estación is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

SHOWCASE OF LOCAL ART

Abril Trejo Rodríguez, one of the welcoming faces at Plaza La Estación, told us that San Miguel de Allende is best known for tin work, wool, bronze, papier maché, and repujado (the art of creating decorative relief in metal).

Plaza La Estación is true to that spirit. A project meant to showcase locally produced items, it is a treasure trove for unique finds.

Trejo is proud of the items available for sale at Plaza La Estación. "Picking a favorite is nearly impossible, they're all special," she says and thinks for a while. "I love the wood carvings from Apaseo el Alto, depicting various animals, perhaps because my dad is a veterinarian."

OJALÁ NIÑOS NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION

Plaza La Estación carries items that showcase and benefit Ojalá Niños, a non-profit organization offering art, music, literacy programs throughout the area. Most of the items for sale from Ojalá Niños are made by children who participate in their art programs in the rural community of San Miguel Viejo.

Ojalá Niños, which includes a year-round after school program and cooperative business model, is dear to the heart of Ana María Luna, an art historian working on the Plaza La Estación project.
